Spot the spoof

Watch a vehicle’s reported position get pulled away by a spoofer, and see which checks catch it first.

TRACKING

Diagram of a true position track and a spoofed solution that peels away from it after a spoofer captures the receiver, with a detection point and a small chart of position offset crossing a threshold.

Simulated, with illustrative figures. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Assumptions behind the figures
  • Speed check flags a reported speed above 18 m/s (true speed 15 m/s)
  • IMU check flags an offset above 5 m plus 0.1 m for every second elapsed
  • Power check flags a rise of 3 dB or more over the real signals
  • The spoofer takes over at 30 s

HOW IT WORKS

Capture, drag, detect

  1. Step 1: Capture

The spoofer matches the real signals, then slowly overpowers them.

  2. Step 2: Drag

It walks the reported position away, often too slowly to notice.

  3. Step 3: Detect

Independent checks such as speed limits, inertial sensors and signal power flag the mismatch.

TRY THIS

Things to try

  • Turn off every check and see how far the position drifts
  • Slow the drift and see which check still catches it
  • Raise the spoofer’s power and watch the power alarm
  • Compare detection time with and without the IMU
